Attwood unveils regeneration plans for Craigavon
Wednesday, 28 July 2010Social Development Minister Alex Attwood today unveiled a new framework outlining future proposals for the regeneration of the Craigavon area.
The Craigavon Integrated Development Framework provides a clear vision for the future of Craigavon. It recognises the three town centres of Central Craigavon, Lurgan and Portadown as an integrated package, whilst distinguishing the individual needs of each of the towns. The framework includes an action and delivery plan of over 50 proposals which could take place over the next 20 years. It is envisaged that each centre will have a flagship project as follows:
· redevelopment of the Castle Lane sites in Lurgan;
· development of lands around Castle Street and the Mall car parks in Portadown; and
· development of lands to east of Civic Centre, in Central Craigavon.
Alex Attwood said: “The Framework provides a vision for the future of Craigavon. It will help the area will have three complementary and successful town centres. They each will have a distinct role and identity and will benefit from an enhanced environment and range of facilities.
“An integrated Development Framework will help encourage private investment. This will be crucial for the Council and its partners to secure and develop Craigavon’s economic future. The work that has gone into the production of the Framework demonstrates the level of dedication and enthusiasm that exists among people concerned about the future development of the Craigavon Borough. In my view, there is a good argument that pound for pound, government investment in urban regeneration is a key economic strategy out of recession; increasing footfall, creating new shops and new jobs. I ask that those who agree join with me in making this very case to my Executive Colleagues. ”
Alderman Sydney Anderson Chairman of the Development Committee said: "The Craigavon Integrated Development Framework represents a real opportunity to transform the Borough. It gives all three centres of Craigavon a co-ordinated and cohesive plan to work together while responding to their individual regeneration needs. With all stakeholders working collectively we can transform this vision into reality.”
The Mayor of Craigavon Alderman Stephen Moutray MLA added: “The Craigavon Integrated Development Framework shows how by working together Craigavon can further develop and compete for regeneration over the next 20 years. It makes sense that by working together as a whole there are greater opportunities for the Borough per se. It will be challenging. However, we welcome the opportunity to work with all agencies and all stakeholders in the future to ensure that the aims of this Integrated Development Framework are realised. It reflects Craigavon’s motto 'together we progress'.”
