Lagan water level lowered as flood precaution

Tuesday, 19 June 2007

The water level on the River Lagan is to be lowered this evening following severe weather warnings.

WaterNI has asked that the river level is lowered to reduce the risk of flooding to the lower Ormeau area.

The river level was allowed to fall after high tide this afternoon. This means rowing will not be possible after 17:30 hours today and on Wednesday.

This action follows a Met Office Severe Weather Warning forecasting up to 40mm of rainfall with the risk of 10 to 15mm in just a few hours in some areas including Belfast. The risk will develop during this evening and overnight with the possibility of localised flooding.
