The works comprise a range of physical improvements to a number of estates in the area and include:
- the provision of additional car parking spaces,
- improved vehicular access at Callan Crescent and Drumbreda Avenue,
- provision of alley gates at Callan Street,
- installation of security gates at Culdee Flats, and
- internal improvements to Callanbridge Community House
The projects, which were identified by the Armagh Neighbourhood Partnership in its Vision Framework and Action plan for regenerating the area, were undertaken by the Housing Executive with funding of over £108,000 from the Department for Social Development through the Neighbourhood Renewal Investment Fund.
Margaret Ritchie said: “Environmental improvement works within local housing estates create a sense of community identity and pride among residents. It helps to promote a safer and more attractive neighbourhood within which to live, work and play. I am pleased to have been able to fund this programme of work so that the people of Armagh benefit from real change.”
Notes to Editors:
1. The Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy 'People and Place' which was published in June 2003, sets out government’s proposals for closing the gap between the quality of life for people in the most deprived neighbourhoods and the rest of society.
The Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy has four interlinking strategic objectives:
- Community Renewal - to develop confident communities that are able and committed to improving the quality of life in their areas.
- Economic Renewal - to develop economic activity in the most deprived neighbourhoods and connect them to the wider urban economy.
- Social Renewal - to improve social conditions for the people who live in the most deprived neighbourhoods through better co-ordinated public services and the creation of safer environments.
- Physical Renewal - to help create attractive, safe and sustainable environments in the most deprived neighbourhoods.
