19 June 2009 - Three convicted of benefit fraud at Londonderry court

Three people were convicted at Londonderry Magistrates’ Court yesterday for claiming benefits they were not entitled to.

Elizabeth Lynch (51) of Circular Road, Londonderry claimed Carers Allowance totalling £2,527 while failing to declare she was employed. She was given a conditional discharge and ordered to pay £43 court costs.

Terence Bradley (35) of Earhart Park, Londonderry claimed Jobseekers Allowance and Housing Benefit totalling £3,031 while failing to declare he was employed. He was given a conditional discharge and ordered to pay £79 court costs.

Alex Lynch (57) of Circular Road, Londonderry claimed Income Support and Housing Benefit totalling £4,470 while his partner worked. He was given a conditional discharge and ordered to pay £64 court costs.

All are also required to repay the money wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.

This brings to 223 the total number of successful prosecutions this year.
