06 May 2008 - Four convicted of benefit fraud at Belfast court

Four people were convicted of benefit fraud at Belfast Magistrates’ Court today.

Don Lorimer (40) of Nendrum Gardens, Rathcoole claimed Income Support and Housing Benefit totalling £29,550 while failing to declare he was in full time employment. He was given 200 hours community service and ordered to pay court costs of £40.

John Stevenson (26) of Woodvale Road, Belfast claimed Carer’s Allowance totalling £4,397 while failing to declare he had capital. He was fined £250 and ordered to pay court costs of £31.

Angela Mooney (24) of Glen Road, Belfast claimed Income Support, Carer’s Allowance and Job Seeker’s Allowance totalling £3,639 while failing declare she was in full time employment. She was given a twelve month conditional discharge and ordered to pay court costs of £40.

Paul Short (37) of New Barnsley Crescent, Belfast was fined £300 and ordered to pay court costs of £22 for duplicate encashment of cheques for Job Seeker’s Allowance totalling £190.

All are also required to repay the money wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.

This brings to 143 the total number of successful prosecutions this year.
