16 May 2008 - Two convicted of benefit fraud at Londonderry court

Two people were convicted at Londonderry Magistrates’ Court yesterday for claiming benefits they were not entitled to.

William O’Donnell (46), of Crawford Square, Londonderry, was given 200 hours community service and ordered to pay court costs of £31.00 for wrongfully cashing Jobseekers Allowance cheques totaling £244.00.

He will also have to repay the money he wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.

Bernadette Peoples (29), of Cornshells Fields, Londonderry, claimed Income Support and Housing Benefit totaling £1,825 while failing to declare she was working. She was fined £300.00 and ordered to pay court costs of £61.00.

Miss Peoples has since repaid in full the money she wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.

This brings to 155 the total number of successful prosecutions this year.
