The Minister was joined by Ulster Unionist leader, Sir Reg Empey on a walking tour of the area to see at first hand the issues affecting the residents.
Margaret Ritchie said “I very much welcome the opportunity to visit the Fountain estate and see for myself the positive effects that regeneration is having here, but also to discuss the issues that still need to be addressed in the area, such as the need for more social housing and regeneration of derelict areas.
“I want to close the gap between those who live in disadvantaged areas and those who do not. I believe all our communities deserve the best possible services to address the inequalities they face and I am committed to ensuring that these are delivered. That is why I have already approved over £120,000 for allocation to community projects in this area over the next two years.
“But funding alone is not the answer. I want to target these resources in a way which has maximum impact for the people living here. That will only be achieved through the continued work of my Department with relevant stakeholders. Together we can improve the quality of life of the people of the Fountain estate.”
