19 May 2009 - Twelve people convicted of benefit fraud at Belfast court

Twelve people were convicted at Belfast Magistrates’ Court today for claiming benefits they were not entitled to.

Trevor Heron (26) of Maryville Street, Belfast was given 75 hours community service and ordered to pay £44 court costs for duplicate encashment of Income Support totalling £73.

James Hamilton (35) of Wilton Street, Belfast was given a 100 hours community service and ordered to pay £28 court costs for duplicate encashment of Income Support totalling £108. A compensation order was granted.

Andrew Lundy (22) of Beersbridge Road, Belfast was given a £350 fine and ordered to pay £22 court costs for duplicate encashment of Income Support totalling £117.

Samuel Lendrum (47) of Battenberg Street, Belfast was given four months imprisonment suspended for two years and ordered to pay £22 court costs for duplicate encashment of Income Support totalling £74. A compensation order was granted.

Jacqueline Coyle (42) of Enfield Parade, Belfast was given a 12 month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £37 court costs for failing to declare employment while claiming Income Support and Housing Benefit totalling £12,817.

Christine Bell (55) of Old Westland Road, Belfast was given a 12 month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £34 court costs for non disclosure of capital while claiming Income Support totalling £10,119.

Sandra Johnston (56) of Mayo Court, Belfast was given a 12 month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £40 court costs for failing to declare employment while claiming Income Support, Carers Allowance and Housing Benefit totalling £11,050.

Sharon Seawright (26) of Westrock Place, Belfast was given a 12 month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £49 court costs for failing to declare employment while claiming Jobseekers Allowance totalling £4,937.

Eleanor Jamison (47) of Devenish Drive, Newtownabbey was given a 12 month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £37 court costs for failing to declare employment while claiming Income Support and Housing Benefit totalling £8,291.

Thomas Lyttle (51) of Distillery Street, Belfast was give a £200 fine and ordered to pay £34 court costs for undeclared capital while claiming Income Support totalling £3,471.

Elizabeth Thompson (43) of Lawnbrook Drive, Belfast was given a 12 month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £80 court costs for failing to declare employment while claiming Income Support totalling £12,970.

Gerard Nixon (53) of Weavershill Walk, Belfast was given a £400 fine and ordered to pay £111 court costs for failing to declare his partner’s employment while claiming Income Support and Housing Benefit totalling £9,906.

All are also required to repay the money they wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.

This brings to 173 the total number of successful prosecutions this year.
