27 May 2009 - Eight people convicted of benefit fraud at Belfast court

Eight people were convicted at Belfast Magistrates’ Court yesterday for claiming benefits they were not entitled to.

Keith Wilson (36) of Ards Drive, Monkstown was given a £40 fine and ordered to pay £46 court costs for failing to declare employment while claiming Jobseekers Allowance totalling £3,224.

Patricia Barr (36) of Stewart Street, Belfast was given a £100 for failure to declare employment while claiming Income Support totalling £7,382.

Patrick Fenton (29) of Faircarragh Drive, Belfast was given a £100 fine for failure to declare employment while claiming Jobseekers Allowance totalling £4,160.

Marguerite Emmett (35) of Manor Close, Belfast was given a £10 fine for failure to declare employment while claiming Income Support totalling £1,583.

Alison McCartan (46) of Rutland Street, Belfast was given a £40 fine and ordered to pay £31 court costs for failure to declare employment while claiming Income Support and Housing Benefit totalling £8,033.

Rodney McLaughlin (22) of Sunningdale Gardens, Belfast was given a £50 fine and ordered to pay £31 court costs for failure to declare employment while claiming Jobseekers Allowance totalling £1,518.

Nikita Rowntree (22) of Sancroft Street, Belfast was given a £100 fine for failure to declare employment while claiming Income Support and Carers Allowance totalling £4,832.

Terence Rush (47) of Trossachs Drive, Belfast was given a £100 fine and ordered to pay £34 court costs for failure to declare employment while claiming Incapacity Benefit and Housing Benefit totalling £3,265.

All are also required to repay the money they wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.

This brings to 184 the total number of successful prosecutions this year.
