Attwood launches new housing for Bangor

Wednesday, 9 June 2010

Social Development Minister Alex Attwood officially started the building work of a £6.4million housing scheme for active older people in Bangor today.

The development of 47 two bedroom apartments at Central Avenue is funded by the Department for Social Development and Oaklee Housing Group. The accommodation has been designed to incorporate the recommendations of the Crime Design Advisor from the PSNI, ensuring that residents feel safe and secure. In addition, they are also being built to high energy efficiency specifications.

Minister Attwood said: "North Down has many advantages but it also is an area of high housing need. I welcome this new housing scheme which when complete, will provide 47 modern, energy efficient apartments for our more mature citizens.

"The delivery of sustainable housing is a key priority for my Department. I know those who come to live here will appreciate the efforts that have been made to create this new accommodation right in the heart of the community, close to all local amenities and public transport links.

"Oaklee Housing Group, working alongside the Department for Social Development and the Housing Executive, is to be congratulated for bringing this scheme to fruition."

Ian Elliott, Group Chief Executive commented: "I am delighted that Oaklee Homes Group are able to construct this new build housing project which will provide a total of 47 apartments for active elderly people in this historic coastal town. The new apartments epitomize the best of Oaklee’s vision for quality life with every amenity, at the heart of the community."

Stephen Graham, the Housing Executive’s South East Area Manager added: "The Housing Executive is pleased to support this scheme by Oaklee Housing Group. The new homes will help address the housing need in North Down."

Construction by TA Kernoghan Holdings has just commenced, with completion planned for February 2012.
