Ritchie welcomes completion of Warrenpoint improvement scheme

Friday, 16 November 2007

Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie officially announced the completion of works to transform the Dock Street area of Warrenpoint during her visit to the town today.

The £223,370 public realm scheme included the repaving of footpaths, improvements to street lighting, planting of trees and the provision of new street furniture. The Department for Social Development provided £120,370 to the overall cost of the project, with the remainder coming from INTERREG (£75,000) and Newry and Mourne District Council (£28,000).

Speaking at an event to mark the scheme’s completion, the Minister said: “Warrenpoint is already acknowledged as one of Northern Ireland’s top tourist destinations. The completion of this work, which is a continuation of an earlier public realm scheme carried out along the Square, has significantly enhanced the seafront area and will contribute to the sustainability of the town as major tourist destination.

“The investment by my Department in partnership with INTERREG and Newry and Mourne Council has helped to transform Warrenpoint making it a more attractive place for local people and visitors alike.”

Following her engagements in Warrenpoint, the Minister travelled to Kilkeel where she met with representatives from Newry and Mourne Council, the local Chamber of Commerce, and the Kilkeel Development Association to discuss regeneration opportunities for the town.
