20 November 2007 - Andersonstown Commercial Hub the way forward says Ritchie

Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie has announced a new feasibility study into the development of a commercial hub in the Andersonstown Gateway Area, which includes the former Andersonstown Barracks site.

It is hoped that the hub will provide a focus for the sustained economic development in this part of West Belfast.

The Minister said: “The Executive has recognised economic development as the driving force behind the creation of wealth and regeneration of our communities, and DSD has a crucial role to play in this.

“It is widely recognised, both here and overseas, that economic regeneration is an important stimulus to areas blighted by deprivation and low levels of achievement.

“The West Belfast and Greater Shankill Task Forces signalled the need for a comprehensive approach to economic regeneration and recognised that West Belfast risked falling behind the rest of the city if inward investment and the growth of local businesses were not adequately addressed. This need is also reflected in the emerging Neighbourhood Renewal Action Plans from West Belfast.

“Working with the West Belfast & Greater Shankill Enterprise Council I want to explore the development opportunities for a commercial hub in Andersonstown Gateway Area. A number of possible sites will be considered including the former Andersonstown Barracks Site. I believe that the findings of this study will form a useful basis on which to make progress with the local community on the way forward.

“I recognise that the community in the vicinity of the former Andersonstown Barracks site have particular concerns which they will wish to voice. Their views are extremely important in considering the way forward. My Department will be contacting the local community in the immediate future to see how best to assist them in engaging with and responding throughout this process.”
