01 October 2007 - Bellaghy man given suspended sentence for benefit fraud

A man was convicted at Magherafelt Magistrates’ Court today for claiming benefit he was not entitled to.

Colm McElwee (40) of Springfield Park, Bellaghy, had claimed Income Support of £13,898 while failing to disclose his savings. He was given a one month prison sentence suspended for two years. He will also have to repay the money he received to the Social Security Agency.

This brings to 282 the number of convictions secured so far this year by the Social Security Agency in its campaign against benefit fraud.
