02 October 2007 - Three convicted of benefit fraud at Downpatrick court

Three people were convicted at Downpatrick Magistrates’ Court yesterday for claiming benefits they were not entitled to.

Caroline Green (23) of Mourneview Avenue, Newcastle, had wrongfully cashed Income Support cheques totalling £185.00. She was given a 12 month conditional discharge.

Kevin Kelly (47) of Bayview Drive, Ardglass, had received £1,345 in Disability Living Allowance while working. He was given a three month custodial sentence suspended for two years.

Suzanne Oakley (35) of Forgehill Court, Saintfield, was fined £450.00 for claiming Income Support and Jobseeker’s Allowance of £6,938 while failing to disclose her savings. She has repaid in full the money she wrongfully claimed.

Those who have not yet done so will have to repay the money they received to the Social Security Agency.

This brings to 288 the number of convictions secured so far this year by the Social Security Agency in its campaign against benefit fraud.
