23 October 2007 - Four convicted of benefit fraud at Belfast court

Four people were convicted of benefit fraud at Belfast Magistrates’ court today.

Martha McNally (42), of Vere Foster Walk, Belfast, claimed Income Support totalling £1,017 while failing to declare she had savings. The offences occurred between July 2003 and August 2005. She was fined £250 and ordered to pay court costs.

Martin Owens (35), of Shanlieve Road, Belfast, claimed Job Seekers Allowance totalling £226 while working. The offences took place between June 2003 and July 2003. He was fined £250 and ordered to pay court costs.

Rita O’Prey (42), of Crocus Street, Belfast, claimed Job Seekers Allowance totalling £3,587 while failing to declare she had savings. The offences occurred between July 2003 and October 2004. She was given 120 hours community service and ordered to pay court costs.

Paul Copeland (27), of Ballymurphy Road, Belfast, was given 150 hours community service and ordered to pay court costs for duplicate encashment of a benefit cheque. The offence took place during September 2005.

All four are required by the Social Security Agency to repay the money they wrongfully obtained. This brings the total number of successful prosecutions this year to 324.
