25 October 2007 - Two convicted of benefit fraud at Lisburn court

Two people were convicted at Lisburn Magistrates’ Court today for claiming benefits they were not entitled to.

June McClements (48) of Derrin Place, Lisburn, had wrongfully cashed benefit cheques totalling £679.00. She was given a one month prison sentence suspended for 18 months and will have to repay the money she received to the Social Security Agency (SSA).

William Connelly (37) of Crossan Walk, Old Warren, Lisburn, had claimed Income Support and Housing Benefit to the value of £3,723 while working. He was given a one month prison sentence suspended for 18 months and will have to repay the Income Support overpayment of £2,545 to the SSA. Housing Benefit overpayment of £1,178 has already been settled.

This brings to 327 the number of convictions secured so far this year by the SSA in its campaign against benefit fraud.
