03 September 2007 - Two convicted of benefit fraud at Newry court

Two women were convicted at Newry Magistrates’ Court today for claiming benefits they were not entitled to.

Bridget McDonnell (56) of Quayside Close, Newry, had claimed Income Support totalling £1,772 while failing to disclose her savings. She was fined 150.00 and ordered to pay court costs of £85.00.

Ursula Quinn (43) of Glebe Park, Mullaghbawn, was found guilty of working in the Irish Republic while claiming Income Support of £19,547. She was given a three month custodial sentence suspended for two years and ordered to pay court costs of £61.00.

Both women will also have to repay the money they received to the Social Security Agency.

This brings to 253 the number of convictions secured so far this year by the Social Security Agency in its campaign against benefit fraud.
