10 September 2007 - Three convicted of benefit fraud at Newtownards court

Three men were convicted at Newtownards Magistrates’ Court today for fraudulently claiming benefits.

Noel Moreland (58) of Blenheim Drive, Newtownards, had claimed Income Support to the value of £7,421 while failing to disclose his savings. He received a 12 month conditional discharge, was fined £100 and ordered to pay court costs.

William West (61) of Victoria Road, Newtownards, had claimed Jobseekers Allowance to the value of £4,494. He received a 12 month conditional discharge. The overpayment has been repaid in full.

John McGrattan (37) of Lisbane Road, Kircubbin, had claimed Income Support and Housing Benefit to the value of £1,311 whilst working full-time. He was fined £500 and ordered to pay £61 of court costs.

Those who have not yet done so will have to repay the money they received to the Social Security Agency

This brings to 260 the number of convictions secured so far this year by the Social Security Agency in its campaign against benefit fraud.
