18 September 2007 - Three convicted of benefit fraud at Belfast court

Three people were convicted of benefit fraud at Belfast Magistrates’ court today.

Margaret Bell (47) of Cavehill Road in Belfast did not declare savings whilst in receipt of Income Support amounting to £9,678. She was given a conditional discharge for one year.

Henry Brown (58) of Mackey Street in Belfast claimed £21,998 in Income Support and Housing Benefit without declaring that he had capital. He was fined £200.00 and ordered to pay court costs.

Wilson Weldon (47) of Inniscarn Drive in Newtownabbey was fined £150.00 and ordered to pay court costs for duplicate encashment of Jobseekers’ Allowance totalling £87.34.

All three are required by the Social Security Agency to repay the money that they wrongfully obtained. This brings the total number of successful prosecutions this year to 272.
