15 September 2008 - Two convicted of benefit fraud at Newtownards court

Two people were convicted at Newtownards Magistrates’ Court today for claiming benefits they were not entitled to.

Phyllis Stevenson (38) of Carncaver Road, Belfast claimed Housing Benefit totalling £2,831 while failing to declare information. She was given a 12 month conditional discharge.

Henry Killen (54) of Lancaster Walk, Newtownards, claimed Income Support and Housing Benefit totalling £15,532 whilst failing to declare he was living with a partner. He was given a 12 month conditional discharge and court costs of £34.

Both are also required to repay the money wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.

This brings to 332 the total number of successful prosecutions this year.
