24 September 2008 - Eight convicted of benefit fraud at Belfast court

Eight people were convicted at Belfast Magistrates’ Court yesterday for claiming benefits they were not entitled to.

Anthony White (44) of Lenadoon Avenue, Belfast was given 100 hours community service and ordered to pay court costs of £22 for duplicate encashment of Income Support totalling £464.

Hazel Annesley (46) of Mervue Court, Belfast claimed Income Support totalling £5,771 while failing to declare she was working. She was given 75 hours community service and ordered to pay court costs of £31.

Rachael Doyle (23) of Moyard House, Belfast claimed Income Support totalling £1,783 while failing to declare she was working full time. She was fined £200 and ordered to pay court costs of £28.

Jolene Morgan (21) of Newbarnsley Park, Belfast claimed Job Seekers Allowance totalling £2,273 while failing to declare she was working full time. She was fined £250 and ordered to pay court costs of £34.

Norma Vaughan (42) of South Bank, Belfast claimed Income Support and Housing Benefit totalling £801while failing to declare she was working. She was fined £250 and ordered to pay court costs of £46.

Jennifer Johnston (32) of Liffey Court, Belfast claimed Income Support totalling £4,141 while failing to declare she was working full time. She was given a12 month conditional discharge and ordered to pay court costs of £34.

Nicola McCabe (27) of Arron Mor, Belfast claimed Income Support totalling £2,559 while failing to declare she was working full time. She was given a 12 month conditional discharge and ordered to pay court costs of £93.

Martha Coyle (56) of River Terrace, Belfast claimed Income Support totalling £16,223 while failing to declare capital. She was given a 12 month conditional discharge and ordered to pay court costs of £28.

All are also required to repay the money wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.

This brings to 360 the total number of successful prosecutions this year.
