05 November 2008 - Newry woman convicted of benefit fraud

A woman has been convicted at Newry Magistrates’ Court today for claiming benefits she was not entitled to.

Shirley Matthews (37) of Drumalane Park, Newry claimed Income Support totalling £2,452 while failing to declare employment. She was fined £275 and ordered to pay court costs of £25.

Miss Matthews is also required to repay the money wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.

This brings to 428 the total number of successful prosecutions this year.
