07 November 2008 - Donaldson praises Polish for enriching cultural diversity

Junior Minister Jeffrey Donaldson today acknowledged the significant contribution Polish people have made to Northern Ireland - both economically and socially.

He was speaking at the opening of the Polish Consulate office in Newry attended by Jerome Mullen, the newly appointed Polish Honorary Consul in Northern Ireland as well as many of the local Polish community.

Mr Donaldson said Northern Ireland has witnessed increasing diversity over the past five years.

He said: “The Polish community has been to the fore in this remarkable change in our society. On a practical level, this involves individuals and families living down the street, attending local schools, working along side us and sharing our places of worship.

“The character of our towns and cities have also been enriched by Polish shops opening up and Polish newspapers appearing on our news stands.”

Mr Donaldson said migrant workers play an essential role in Northern Ireland’s economy.

“Without internationally recruited staff our health services would not be able to deliver the services needed; without migrant workers we would not be able to erect the new buildings that are modernising our towns and cities.

“In addition to the contribution to our economy, we welcome and appreciate all who have come to live here for the fresh perspectives and ideas that they bring and for the contributions they make to our cultural life.”

Mr Donaldson also spoke of the importance of inclusion of all.

“We want to build a fair society for all of our citizens, irrespective of their origins. Our Programme for Government includes the promotion of tolerance and inclusion as one of its key priorities.

“As we face a new future I hope and believe we can look forward optimistically to a place full of potential; a place full of opportunity for all; and a place that embraces all of our diverse communities.”
