12 June 2009 - McGuinness lights the flame at Special Olympics ceremony

Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness MP, MLA, joined today with An Tanáiste Mary Coughlan TD in the opening of the Special Olympics Ulster Regional Games in Letterkenny Co Donegal.

Addressing some 600 athletes who are competing across a variety of events, Mr McGuinness said: “The Special Olympics is a truly inspirational organisation where you the athletes not only achieve sporting excellence but do so in the true spirit of sport.

“That spirit is captured in the oath that you take:- ‘Let me win. But if I cannot win let me brave in the attempt.’

“That is a pledge which I know applies not just to your sporting endeavours but is carried through all parts of your lives.

“With the support of your families, your coaches, your supporters and the many volunteers who help prepare these games you continue to inspire us all through your striving for excellence, your determination to do your best, your efforts to fully fulfil your potential.”
