17 June 2009 - Junior Ministers Welcome Early Childhood experts to Belfast

Junior Ministers Gerry Kelly and Jeffrey Donaldson joined delegates from 78 different countries for the opening ceremony of the World Forum on Early Care and Education in Belfast.

The Early Years Organisation overcame stiff competition from a number of countries to host the prestigious event which has attracted some 600 early childhood experts, trainers, caregivers and officials.

Junior Minister Kelly stated: "It is now generally accepted that the first years of a child’s life are of critical importance for children’s development and well-being.

"It is during these early months and years that a high percentage of children’s learning takes place, that attitudes are formed, first relationships are made, concepts are developed and the foundation of all later skills and learning are laid."

Junior Minister Donaldson highlighted the very real benefit that a conference of this calibre can realise: "This conference not only encourages discussion around the benefits good quality early years provision can provide in both the short and long term, but is also a wonderful opportunity for us to share experiences and ideas at an international level. As Junior Ministers we are committed to ensure these issues remain top of the Executive’s agenda.”

The 2009 World Forum marked the 10th Anniversary of the World Forum Foundation.
