23 June 2008 - Junior Ministers praise youth for efforts to end interface violence in north Belfast

Junior Ministers Jeffrey Donaldson and Gerry Kelly met with a group of young people at Stormont today to hear first hand of their campaign to end interface violence in north Belfast.

The leaflet and poster initiative is designed to highlight the tragic reality of interface violence that often ends up in serious injury, disfigurement or in death.

Both Ministers praised the young people for their efforts in bringing this important message to the community.

Mr Donaldson said: "I welcome the direct involvement of young people from the local community in this project. There is a strong and united message here that the local community is saying no to interface violence.

"Violence mars the communities reputation, creates and maintains divisions within our society and does no one any good. We welcome this opportunity to reinforce and endorse this message.

"It was very positive to see that the Tour of the North parade passed off without serious incident at the weekend. We commend all those involved for their hard work in months and weeks up to this parade to ensure a peacefully and trouble-free night. We hope that this will continue throughout the summer.”

Mr Kelly said: "The summer has historically been difficult for communities in north Belfast. All too often we see the image of young people in conflict across interfaces. This project demonstrates young people acting to stop violence erupting. They are showing real leadership within communities and this should be recognised.

"Over the past weekend we have witnessed areas where dialogue can replace conflict. We need to build on models of dialogue and promote a peaceful summer.

"As Ministers we endorse and agree with what these young people say to violence at interfaces – wise up M8."
