31 October 2008 - McGuinness welcomes third Bridge for Derry

Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness has welcomed plans to build a third bridge across the River Foyle in Derry.

Mr McGuinness said: "This innovative and iconic bridge project, that has been announced today, will provide a lasting legacy for the city.

“This will be the third bridge over the river, and one which I see as a tangible step in linking the two sides of the city by providing an opportunity for people to access both the newly developed shared open space at Ebrington and come right into the heart of the city centre near the Guildhall."

Notes to Editors:

  1. Ilex has secured European Union funding for the foot and cycle bridge project under the Peace III peace and reconsolidation programme.
  2. Ilex is a urban regeneration company owned and sponsored jointly by OFMDFM and DSD.
  3. The estimated capital cost of the project is £13million and from the commencement of construction will take approximately two years to complete.
  4. The key aim of the project is to support the continued development of a shared society by providing public spaces which are shared by all members of that society. This is achieved by tackling the problems of separation of communities within society and by doing so beginning to address the underlying social problems. The priority being to expand the opportunities for public spaces to be available for common use, interaction and engagement, and economic development in areas that have been particularly affected by the conflict.
