04 April 2008 - Interim Advocate for older people announced

An interim advocate for older people will be in place here within a matter of months Junior Ministers Gerry Kelly and Jeffrey Donaldson have announced.

Speaking at the launch of Age Concerns Public Policy Review Document Ministers said that the post was due to be advertised in coming weeks and it was hoped that an appointment would be made as soon as possible.

Speaking at the event which was held in the Long Gallery in Parliament Buildings Minister Kelly said: “In December the First Minister and deputy First Minister announced their intention to appoint an Older Peoples’ Commissioner. This appointment requires legislation to be put in place so to cover the interim period it has been decided to appoint an advocate for older people. We expect to advertise the post shortly.”

Mr Donaldson said: “The new advocate will act as a conduit between the sector and ministers. Among a wide ranging remit they will have a significant role to play in advising on the role of the new commissioner. In addition they will co-chair, with a senior departmental official, the Advisory Panel which will report back to Ministers about issues relevant to the sector.”

During the course of the launch Ministers said they were actively involved in ensuring the Programme for Government delivers a strong independent voice for Older People.

Welcoming the Review document Minister Kelly said: “The new administration faces quite significant challenges in the years ahead and not least how we ensure that our public services are fit for purpose and that they are delivered to best effect for all our citizens including older people.”

Jeffrey Donaldson said he was looking forward to working with the Sector: “We will be developing with the sector and with key organisations such as Age Concern to ensure that, collectively, we continue to make a difference to the lives of our older people. It is essential we get this right because people are living healthier and longer lives – a trend that is set to continue.”
