Speaking at the 90th anniversary of the Ulster Farmers Union annual dinner, Dr Paisley said that whilst agriculture had faced a volatile year, the government was taking practical steps to safeguard the industry: “Since the devolution of power last May, the Executive has been working to improve the industry’s access to the decision-making process.
“Agriculture is an essential part of our economic livelihood. It is imperative that government departments work closely with all the industry’s stakeholders to meet the challenges ahead so that we can make the best case possible for our Province and establish our rightful place in national and international markets.”
Dr Paisley also thanked the farming industry for their assistance in implementing measures to tackle recent disease outbreaks: “I know these measures have often caused pain and difficulties. However, our collective efforts and early responses have resulted in positive outcomes and prevented diseases from becoming established here.
“The Executive will continue to do what it believes to be appropriate in bearing down on these diseases which are so costly and which do nothing to enhance the public image of our industry.”
Dr Paisley concluded his speech by thanking the Ulster Farmers Union for their strong, focused and strategic leadership and for their valuable input and considered opinion over the course of the past year.
