Launching Intercultural and Anti-Racism Week 2008, Jeffrey Donaldson spoke of the Executive’s commitment to embracing the development of a diverse and equal society while recognising that challenges existed.
“Our Executive heartily welcomes the people who have chosen to come to Northern Ireland to share their skills and labour with us. But we must acknowledge the very real and urgent challenges that these demographic changes bring.
“If we are truly to experience a shared future we must acknowledge and tackle all forms of division and prejudice, whatever their basis. Every one of us has a responsibility and a role to play in creating a society that is at ease with the diversity of individuals and whole communities.”
The theme of Intercultural and Anti Racism Week this year is Education. Gerry Kelly spoke of the important role education has to play.
“We recognise that education has a key role to play in challenging racism and sectarianism, and building a better and shared future for all people here. It is in the minds of our young people today that the seeds are being sown for our future.
“We witness daily, the increasing diversity amongst people who live on this island. All new communities and migrant workers in our society are very welcome for the economic benefits, skills, new ideas, and fresh perspectives that they bring.”
The Office of the First Minister and deputy First Minister is currently working on bringing forward detailed proposals for a ‘Programme of Cohesion, Sharing and Integration for a shared and better future’ which will build on the solid foundation established by the ‘Racial Equality Strategy’ and the ‘Shared Future’ documents.
