03 April 2009 - McGuinness launches new Lough Neagh Lifeboat

Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness MP MLA, today launched the ‘David Gray’ Lough Neagh Rescue lifeboat which is named in honour of the co-founding member of the lifeboat Service whose son David was drowned on the Lough in 1989.

Speaking at the launch at the Lough Neagh Rescue, Battery Harbour base in Ardboe, Co Tyrone, Mr McGuinness said: “This rescue service has its origins in a personal tragedy, the death of David Gray, in 1989. The donation of the first lifeboat by his family and the subsequent development of the Lough Neagh Rescue Service, has ensured the safety of 171 people who have been taken aboard the boats and over 400 people who have received assistance to return to shore.

“I welcome the opportunity to launch your new boat but also to publicly recognise the ongoing work of the many volunteers who make the launch of the vessels here and at Kinnego possible. The volunteers and supporters of Lough Neagh Rescue offer support in many ways but in particular, I would like to commend the work of those crew members who respond to our calls for help by launching the lifeboats regardless of the weather conditions and the many risks to their personal safety.”

Acknowledging the presence of members of the Gray family, Mr McGuinness added: “I hope that the launch today recognises the fund raising efforts of your father David Gray and acts as a continuing tribute to both your father and brother.”

The Minister also commended the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development who assisted in the provision of the rescue boats through the Lough Neagh Strategic Fund and Lough Neagh Partnership. He also praised the local community for the fund raising efforts they had undertaken.

Concluding Mr McGuinness said: “Those of us who enjoy the pleasures of water based activities, hope we never have to call on your services but we sleep more soundly in the knowledge that when the need arises that you will respond.”
