Donaldson visits Cardiff Bay Regeneration Project
Thursday, 19 February 2009Junior Minister Jeffery Donaldson has been given a tour of the highly successful Cardiff Bay Regeneration Project today.
The project is part of the UK Government’s Urban Development Program to regenerate particularly deprived and run-down areas of British inner cities.
Mr Donaldson said: “The Cardiff Bay project is an excellent example of how to provide a superb environment in which people will want to live, work and play. The project has successfully managed to bring forward a mix of developments and a range of job opportunities that realise the hopes and aspirations of the communities of Cardiff City and the bay area.
“A regeneration project such as this is all about balance. It is crucial to ensure the right balance between social housing and industrial building, the right balance between the community demands and the business needs and the right balance between development and the environment. It is clear that the Cardiff Bay Regeneration Project has achieved that and much of what has been done here could be applied to similar projects in Northern Ireland.”
The Cardiff Bay Regeneration Project has provided 14.7 million sq ft of non-housing development and 5,780 housing units creating approximately 31,000 new jobs. £1.8billion of private finance was leveraged and approximately 200 acres (0.81km2) of derelict land was reclaimed.
