Government committed to listening to young people

Monday, 23 February 2009

Junior Minister Jeffrey Donaldson has told the Young Peoples' Youth Panel that their opinions are being listened to and taken on board by the Executive.

The Junior Minister met recently with the Youth Panel at the offices of the Northern Ireland Commissioner for Children and Young People (NICCY) to be quizzed on his role as a Minister and on the work he does in relation to children and young people.

Junior Minister Donaldson said: “As Junior Ministers with responsibility for children and young people’s issues, both Gerry Kelly and I are committed to listening to their views. Young people’s issues are challenging and complex, if as adults we are to truly meet their needs we need to listen and hear what they have to say.

“The group I have met are passionate about young people’s issues and are extremely well informed. I cannot help but be impressed and inspired by their commitment. I am determined that government will match their commitment.”

The Youth Panel has 42 members aged between 12 and 21 and acts as a consultation committee to provide the Commissioner with views and opinions of children and young people.
