Robinson and McGuinness meet representatives from the agriculture sector

Tuesday, 24 February 2009

The First Minister, the Rt. Hon Peter Robinson MP MLA, the deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness MP, MLA and the DARD Minister, Michelle Gildernew MLA met with representatives from the Ulster Farmers’ Union today to discuss significant challenges facing the industry, together and the unique contribution it makes to the economy in Northern Ireland.

At the meeting Mr McGuinness said: “We believe that continued dialogue between all parts of the agri-food sector is needed to ensure best returns for the industry. The new support structures set up last year will ensure that the industry has a co-ordinated development and support from the public sector, whilst allowing the industry unprecedented direct influence at a strategic level.”

Mr Robinson said: “I welcome the opportunity to hear directly from representatives of the farming sector. The Executive recognises the important role the agricultural industry continues to play, especially in rural areas, and will continue to support the sector. In terms of contribution to the economy agriculture is three times more important than at the UK level.”

Both Ministers hope to continue to work closely with the Ulster Farmer's Union and other stakeholders, to ensure that Northern Ireland’s Agricultural Sector will flourish during these difficult economic times.
