24 January 2008 - Deputy First Minister joins school children to launch RSPB's big garden birdwatch

Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness, MP, MLA has joined with school children from Tor Bank Special School in Dundonald to urge support the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch.

The students travelled to Stormont Castle today to urge the Minister to get out for one hour this weekend to watch and record the birds he sees.

Mr McGuinness said: “I am delighted to endorse the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch the biggest such event in the world. It is clear that participants are making an important contribution towards understanding bird trends and tracking bird numbers here. If at all possible, I hope to find some time over the weekend to complete my survey form and would urge as many people as possible to do the same.”

Praising the contribution of the students from Tor Bank School the Minister said: “It is clear to see the enthusiasm from the pupils of Tor Bank about their local environment. Their knowledge regarding wildlife and birds in particular would put many adults to shame.”
