Historic developments milestones and not millstones - McGuinness
Friday, 20 July 2007Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness MP, MLA said that the historic events of recent times were milestones marking the road to a better future not the millstones of division they may have been in the past.
He was speaking at the Patrick MacGill Summer School in Glenties Co. Donegal
Describing the events of March 26 and May 8 as remarkable Mr McGuinness said that the new Executive which he jointly heads would set as its priorities the building of stable political structures to enable society to live in peace.
Referring to the recent meetings of the British Irish Council and the North South Ministerial Council he said they had produced tangible results such as the announcement of major investment in infrastructure.
He also predicted that the forthcoming investment conference to be hosted in Belfast next year would prove to be the most important event of its kind ever to take place there.
The Minister added: “The road that we have embarked upon threatens no-one instead it is one that we can all journey on together to build a society to which we can all pledge our allegiance.
“Working together we can fulfil the express will of the people to end conflict on this island and build a better future for all of the people.”
