The OFMDFM Ministers today met with representatives from Help the Aged to discuss age related policy issues. They have been given particular responsibility for the co-ordination of policy with respect to older people across government and within the Executive.
Speaking after the meeting, Ian Paisley Jnr said: “The fact that people are living longer and healthier lives is a cause for celebration, not least because it reflects the success of our health and caring services.
“However, too many older people are in financial hardship, living lonely and isolated lives and often in fear of their personal safety.
“There is a clear consensus that we need to do something urgently to improve the lives of those older people who are most at risk and most vulnerable.”
Mr Kelly said: “It is our desire to champion, at every level of the decision making process, the cause for older people. We all want to see real and positive improvements in their lives; more co-ordinated health and social care; society affording them more respect, independence and a better quality of life.
“The Office of the First and deputy First Minister has already undertaken to examine the case for a Commissioner for Older People, and we are actively considering how best we can serve the needs of older people,” he continued.
“The review is expected to be completed by the end of the year and any decisions will be made in conjunction with our Ministerial colleagues in the Executive.”
