Most vulnerable must not pay price for crisis not of their making - McGuinness

Thursday, 9 July 2009

Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness MP, MLA has addressed the Biennial Delegate conference of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions held in Tralee Co. Kerry.

Speaking at the conference he said that as we found ourselves in the midst of the severest economic downturn in 70 years it was imperative that the most vulnerable in our society were protected.

The Minister said: “The recession cannot, and must not, be used as an excuse to drive down the terms and conditions of employment for ordinary workers.

“Ordinary workers cannot be asked to pay the heaviest price for a crisis not of their making.”

Mr McGuinness also told delegates that a partnership approach was fundamental as society strove to emerge from the downturn more quickly and stronger.

He said: “Our work can only be successful if we work in partnership. Partnership at a political level, with Unions, with business, partnership across the length and breadth of this island.

He also identified investment in education as a key priority.

The Minister continued: “We must strive to be the best educated workforce in Europe even when faced with the current financial constraints.”

Referring to the recent announcement of the Irish governments commitment to the A5 and A8 road projects to Derry and Larne, he highlighted the vital role played by the construction industry in the North saying that government and public sector spending in this sphere accounted for 40% of the total industry turnover and supported some 25,000 jobs as a result.
