McGuinness commends business award winners
Thursday, 11 June 2009Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness,MP, MLA, has praised the social consciousness of businesses in supporting local communities during the present economic downturn.
Speaking at the annual Business in the Community Awards held in the Waterfront Hall, Mr McGuinness said companies here were playing a crucial role in supporting local community groups and projects addressing a range of social and economic issues.
“Although we are in the middle of an unprecedented economic storm, our focus is on recovery.
“We are determined to support our businesses, reclaim economic growth and row back the tide of unemployment. We are rising to the challenge of the current economic climate.
“Business in the Community continues to play a critical role in supporting local community groups and projects, addressing a range of social and economic issues:
- it brings expertise and a business acumen to the work of social entrepreneurs in disadvantaged communities;
- it inspires and raises the expectations of young people, demonstrating a future beyond that mapped out by circumstance and disadvantage; and
- it helps change business practices to benefit us all, delivering equality and sustainable development.
