Good Morning Telephone Network praised by Junior Minister Kelly

Monday, 29 June 2009

Junior Minister Gerry Kelly today praised the work of an older people’s organisation which, through daily phones calls, helps reduce the loneliness and isolation felt by many older adults.

Speaking at the first Annual General Meeting of the Good Morning Northern Ireland Network, Mr Kelly said their vital work helped keep people to maintain their independence and remain in their own homes for longer.

He said: “The Good Morning Network has our thanks for the important work they do for all our older people.

“I have been very impressed with what they have achieved including the essential support being provided to vulnerable older people particularly in the areas of health and well being, and community safety.

“The Network also helps to tackle problems associated with isolation, loneliness and the fear of crime together with providing much needed reassurance to our older citizens, particularly those most at risk, that they are not alone, that help, support and assistance is available to address the problems they face.

"With something as simple as a daily telephone call the network helps connect older and other vulnerable adults to their community and local services, and supports those individuals who wish to remain in their own homes thereby maintaining their independence.”
