06 March 2008 - Paisley and McGuinness - Time right for local business to lead the World

First Minister Rt Hon Dr Ian Paisley MP MLA and deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness MP MLA have told a meeting of the IBEC-CBI Joint Business Council that the time is right for business here to lead the world once again.

Speaking at the Council’s annual dinner in Belfast Dr Paisley said: “In years gone by Northern Ireland led the world in shipbuilding, rope works and linen manufacture. The time is now right for Northern Ireland to lead the way once again.

“For the first time in decades we have a real opportunity to create the conditions for sustainable economic growth and prosperity. The Executive is determined to grasp that opportunity and has laid a solid foundation upon which growth can be achieved.”

Dr Paisley also praised the work of the Joint Business Council: “The Council’s work in developing and sustaining economic and business links has improved the competitiveness of firms from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland internationally.”

Mr McGuinness said: “The economies across this island face the challenge of increased global competition. It is my firm belief that there remains a huge potential, with increased economic co-operation to meet this challenge. It is imperative that we work together to realise this potential and advance our international competitiveness.

“The restoration of the political institutions offer us the ability to support our local industries, build competitiveness and spur on economic growth for the benefit of all on this Island.”
