19 March 2008 - Exploration of different cultures beneficial - Donaldson

Junior Minister Jeffrey Donaldson today launched the Ordinary Lives exhibition which offers an insight into the personal stories behind migration.

The British Council project has ‘Intercultural Dialogue’ as its theme and encourages people to explore the benefits of cultural heritage and the opportunities to learn from different cultural traditions.

An accompanying booklet on the subject contains a foreword by the First Minister the Rt Hon Dr Ian Paisley and deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness.

Mr Donaldson said: “Too often our view can be shaped by headlines, stereotypes and statistics. This project allows us to see behind these to the individuals who have come to live and work amongst us.

“This exhibition offers a wonderful opportunity to gain an insight into the personal stories behind migration. The stories convey the network of human relationships and the connections to local communities which underpin the migration experience.”

The Junior Minister added: “Migration is not a solitary experience – it is one that impacts on and involves all of us.”

OFMDFM is providing funds of around £10,000 for the project.
