30 May 2007 - Deputy First Minister condemns arson attacks

The deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness, has described as “despicable” a recent fire at a Co.Tyrone church hall and promised to work to bring an end to such attacks.

Speaking today during a visit to St Patrick’s Church of Ireland, Donaghmore, Mr McGuinness said: “We all need to be clear in our condemnation of such attacks. Whether they are as a result of pure vandalism or fuelled by sectarianism – they are ugly and simply have no place in today’s society.”

The Rector, Rev Peter Thompson, showed the Minister the considerable fire damage the hall suffered following the arson attack earlier this month.

Mr McGuinness added: “Attacking a church, such as St Patrick’s, which plays such a central role in the lives of so many families in Donaghmore and the surrounding area, is despicable. It is particularly worrying as it is one of a number of recent attacks in the area, but those responsible need to know we will not tolerate it and are committed to doing all we can to stop them.

“People who attack places of worship have nothing positive to add to our community. As a community we must work together to address and bring an end to such attacks.”
