01 May 2008 - Junior Ministers tour Ebrington barracks

Junior Ministers Gerry Kelly and Jeffrey Donaldson visited the North West today to see first hand the plans for regenerating the Ebrington Barracks site.

They met with staff from the Ilex Urban Regeneration Company who briefed the Ministers on their work in taking forward the regeneration of the city – including the former military sites at Ebrington and Fort George.

Gerry Kelly said: “Ilex is an innovative approach to regeneration, bringing together local and central government with other experts in the field to create a vibrant mixed and sustainable economy.

“What better symbol for the future of this city than converting a disused military base into an engine for economic regeneration. I look forward to returning to see the new piazza, which will be the largest public space in the city.”

Jeffrey Donaldson said: “We are experiencing an economic re-growth and revitalising this city and the surrounding area, which like the rest of Northern Ireland, has a great deal to offer.

“These two sites create wonderful opportunities for the regeneration and revitalisation of the economy for the city. In particular, the proposed new foot and cycle bridge from Ebrington to the city side will help to bridge the emotional and cultural divide which has existed for so long.”

The Ministers also welcomed the announcement earlier in the day by Investment Minister Nigel Dodds that Firstsource Solutions was to create 300 new jobs in the city. This is in addition to the existing 530 people already employed there.
