24 October 2007 - First and deputy First Ministers to meet Iraqi parliamentarians

A delegation of senior Iraqi parliamentarians will meet tomorrow (Thursday) with the First Minister and deputy First Minister.

First Minister Rt Hon Dr Ian Paisley MP, MLA and deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness MP, MLA are holding a meeting with the delegation in Parliament Buildings in Stormont.

The delegation includes Mr Khalid Atiyah, the First Deputy Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament, who is a highly influential figure within the parliament.

Among the topics to be covered will be how devolution might be developed for provinces within Iraq as well as issues surrounding local government and conflict resolution.

The visit is being arranged by the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs which is associated with the Democratic Party in the United States.

Speaking in advance of the meeting Dr Paisley said: “I welcome this opportunity to meet with this highly influential delegation and offer any assistance that we can to help them in their efforts to secure a peaceful future for their people.”

Mr McGuinness said: “People and governments from all over the world have shown massive interest in our experiences of conflict resolution. Whilst understanding no two sets of circumstances are the same I believe we can make a contribution to helping other countries move forward.”
