Justice Minister, Claire Sugden, has unreservedly condemned the actions of violent dissident republicans who placed the life of a police officer and his family in danger.
A volatile and viable device was discovered outside the home of a police officer in Londonderry this morning. Army Technical Officers attended the scene.
Minister Sugden said: “This is a sickening and cowardly attack which was intended to cause death or injury and is to be utterly condemned.
“This officer serves the community of Northern Ireland and risks his life to keep people safe. I pay tribute to the officer for his vigilance and my thoughts are with him and his family at what must be a very upsetting time.
"There is no place in civil society for these mindless acts of violence, and no possible justification. Attacks on police officers are attacks on our whole community; they generate nothing but fear and intimidation.
“Those intent on bringing Northern Ireland back to the dark days of violence have absolutely nothing to offer our community, and they will be brought to justice.”
The Minister also voiced her concern at the discovery of a viable device found earlier today outside a home in Sion Mills.
The Minister added: “I would urge anyone with information on either incident to bring it to the police, or report it anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
