The Executive is committed to working together with the UK Government to tackle the important challenges of rebalancing the economy and tackling divisions in our society.

Rebalancing the economy and building a shared future

On 14 June 2013, the First Minister and deputy First Minister joined Prime Minister David Cameron at Downing Street to unveil an economic package that would see both the Executive and the UK Government working imaginatively towards a shared and prosperous society.

The following proposals were agreed:

  • An investment plan that confirms we are on course to deliver the commitment to £18 billion of capital funding over the period 2005-2017;
  • £300 million investment through enhanced capital borrowing powers, and Government top-ups to PEACE IV and EU Structural Funding to support frontline projects;
  • To continue Northern Ireland’s Assisted Areas Status coverage in order to help the Executive provide the targeted support that has helped to promote over 3,000 new private sector jobs in the last three months alone;
  • A new way forward on Enterprise Zones and planning reform, as well as initiatives to drive investment in infrastructure, promote new businesses and boost tourism.

Building a Prosperous and United Community - One year on

The First Minister and deputy First Minister met with Prime Minister David Cameron on 2 July 2014 to review progress on the ‘economic pact’, Building a Prosperous and United Community. In that pact, a series of measures were agreed which are consistent with the Northern Ireland Executive’s Economic Strategy and the joint aims to rebalance the economy and build a shared future.

A year on from the publication of that package, the meeting provided an opportunity to reflect on the progress made in areas such as job promotion, research and development, investment and infrastructure, and consider the further challenges that lie ahead.
